Low-cost, high-impact tech is transforming how Malawi grows food, treats animals, and builds resilience.

A quiet revolution is reshaping Malawi. Far from the gleaming tech hubs of Silicon Valley, a powerful new ally is emerging on small farms, in university labs, and inside government offices: Artificial Intelligence.

This is not science fiction, it is grounded innovation, tackling some of the country’s most persistent challenges, from agricultural resilience to energy access.

In the village of Ndodo, 40 kilometres from Malawi’s Capital, Lilongwe, Christina Matsenga watched with concern as her goat, a vital family asset, stopped eating.

The nearest government agricultural officer was 25 miles away—too far and too costly for many. But help was just a WhatsApp message away.

A local farmer support agent, equipped with a smartphone, took photos of the goat and sent them to Ulangizi, an AI-powered chatbot.

Within moments, Ulangizi responded with a diagnosis and treatment plan in Chichewa, the local language, read aloud so Matsenga could understand.

This single exchange captures the promise of AI in Malawi: a technology created not for corporate profit, but for meaningful human impact.

While the country’s AI adoption is still in its early stages, a unique ecosystem is beginning to take shape, blending grassroots ingenuity with strategic vision.

It is the story of a nation rich in ambition but limited in resources, determined to embrace the digital age on its own terms.

The Digital Adviser in a Farmer’s Pocket

For the more than 80% of Malawians who rely on smallholder farming, unpredictable weather, crop diseases, and limited access to expert advice are daily challenges.

Into this reality stepped Opportunity International, a nonprofit that developed Ulangizi, which means “advice”.

This generative AI tool, powered by Microsoft’s Azure platform, runs on the familiar WhatsApp interface, making it intuitive and accessible. Farmers can ask questions in English or Chichewa via text or voice notes, and even upload photos of sick crops or animals.

Its knowledge base is built on Malawi’s comprehensive 700-page government agricultural manual, transforming a dense document into real-time, life-saving advice.

For farmers who once waited endlessly for support, Ulangizi now provides reliable answers in seconds.

“Ulangizi AI is a farmer adviser in our pocket,” says Bhahati Zimba, a farmer and senior programme officer at Opportunity International.

The tool proved vital after Cyclone Freddy hit in 2023, devastating crops with moisture-related diseases like root rot and blight.

“If I had this, I could have saved my crop,” one farmer lamented, highlighting the tool’s potential to build resilience against climate shocks.

Still, digital empowerment faces hurdles. In Ndodo, a single smartphone may be shared by 150 people. Weak mobile networks and high data costs remain serious barriers in the very communities this technology is meant to help.

This has led to a “high-tech, high-touch” model, where trained Farmer Support Agents act as digital intermediaries, bringing AI into communities that might otherwise be left behind.

Forging Innovators in the UniPod

While Ulangizi represents a bottom-up solution, Malawi is also investing from the top down. At the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) in Blantyre, a new generation of homegrown tech talent is rising.

The University Innovation Pod, or UniPod, is a state-of-the-art facility supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It’s designed to turn academic research into market-ready products that reduce Malawi’s reliance on imports.

Before the UniPod, many ideas remained just that, ideas.

“Now, we have a place where we can turn them into tangible solutions that impact real communities,” says Joseph Phiri, an electrical engineering lecturer.

Phiri and his student, Emmanuel Malamba, are developing an intelligent electricity metering system for mini-grids, an innovation born from Malamba’s own experience growing up without power.

Their project could make clean energy more affordable for the 96% of rural Malawians who live off-grid.

Elsewhere in the UniPod, biomedical engineering lecturer Dr Chimwewe Msosa has built MedApp, a software tool that helps hospitals manage and maintain essential medical equipment.

But the UniPod is more than a facility, it is a blueprint for tech-driven change in Malawi.

“The UniPod is a testament to what can happen when global ambition meets local ingenuity,” says Fenella Frost, UNDP Resident Representative in Malawi.

Its success is gaining attention beyond Malawi. The African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) is now considering the UniPod as a potential model for innovation hubs across the continent.

A national Vision for AI and Innovation

These on-the-ground innovations are supported by a broader national digital strategy. Malawi’s long-term development plan, Malawi 2063, places digital transformation at its core, and artificial intelligence as a key enabler.

The National Digitalisation Policy (2023–2028) promotes AI as a tool to improve government efficiency, boost agricultural productivity, and support evidence-based policymaking.

But this isn’t just about adopting technology, it is also about values. The government is actively participating in global AI ethics discussions to ensure local implementation aligns with principles of fairness, inclusion, and transparency.

Officials like Dr Chomora Mikeka, Director of Science, Technology and Innovation, are helping shape Malawi’s voice in international AI governance.

At the launch of the 2025 Human Development Report on AI, Information and Digitalisation Minister Moses Kunkuyu Kalongashawa made a bold statement:

“It is not artificial intelligence that will define our destiny, but the real choices we make today. And Malawi is choosing transparency over algorithms, equity over convenience, and people—not platforms—as the purpose of our progress.”

That stance is important. As Malawian tech entrepreneur Tapiwa Kandiado warns, the country must avoid becoming just a consumer of AI.

“Malawi must develop its own AI expertise—independent of imported solutions,” he says.

The Road ahead

This is just the beginning of Malawi’s AI story, one being written in code, community, and conviction.

Initiatives like the UniPod still rely heavily on support from development partners. The digital divide remains wide, and no single app can close it.

But the momentum is real. From a farmer saving her goat with a simple voice note, to students reimagining the future of energy and healthcare, Malawians are not waiting for the future to arrive.

They are building it, one WhatsApp message, one innovation, one bold idea at a time.

The quiet revolution is already underway. And though its full impact is still unfolding, its potential is unmistakable.
